Magician Golub
How I became a magician? Well, certainly I was not born like that :) I'm
joking. When I was little I used to always admire magicians. I was mostly
wathcing them on TV, but I was lucky to have seen a magician live one day.
Simple he appeared in my classroom one day in front of my IIa class in middle
school and showed us some tricks, which for me was an unforgettable
performance. We kids were participating in some tricks on stage. There were a
lot of funny tricks and we really enjoyed it.
From that time I was an active learner and where ever I could i did magic
tricks. First trick that I learned how to do was a trick with three paper
balls, that pass trough a table and appear under a hat. One of the other
tricks I learned was a trick with cards, and I successfully show them to my
friends. Then in some local paper i found an advertisement for two basic
magic books. I was in forth grade, and I somehow convinced my parents to buy
me those two books. In there i found a lot of interesting tricks for
beginners, just what I needed at that time. I choose the best tricks from
that books and i performed them to my friends, but I was running out of new
tricks to perform, so I stopped with tricks.
I must say that in my country we do not have any magician association or any
magic circles, and magic books in serbo-croatian are rare.
Then luck came to me again. I meet another magic trick lover. It was on the
scout jamboree on Boracko lake in 1985. One of my coeval from the same scout
troop had the same two books that i had, but he brought them with him and he
was studying it more than I was, and he showed me some tricks from that books
which I forgot how to do. I left my books at home and I was disappointed
because I couldnt look in my books to remember how some tricks go. But some
of my practiced tricks he did not show so we joined forces, and from that
time we shared magic tricks and help each other to improve our shows. His
name is Marko Cehaja and with him together we spent many years getting
together everything we could like explanations of tricks (from articles in
newspaper) and any magic books that we could find. One time we found an
advertisement for 25 booklets about lots of domains of magic. That was so big
for us, so we got together and spared money for those books. When I look at
those books now I see very poorly designed books, and see that magic tricks
are not explained very well, but we succeeded to extract essence and we
create our own way to perform them. Author of that booklets (on our language)
is magician Dragan Simonovic - Apa from Belgrade, Yugoslavia. I see now that
those booklets were made from tricks explained in some foreign books, which I
had gotten lately, and where those tricks were explained the right way. I
still don't know if the author of those booklets has the right to copy tricks
and pictures from those foreign books. Mainly to me and Marko these booklets
helped to see complexes of different magic areas. Afterwards we got some of
the foreign books, that helped us a lot.
My first show on stage was in 1987 in disco club in Saracica near Banja Luka,
Bosnia. It was a joined performance with Marko. We were very young and when
we got there he audience did not like us very much. We didnt have suites, and
we didnt not look like magicians, but we succeeded to astonish the audience.
I was very nervous, but my performance was very good. My next show was in my
high school during a Christmas party, where kids were waiting for Santa
Claus so they can tell him their Christmas wishes. For that show I and Marko
were drilled and kids and adults were very satisfied. During the next magic
shows Marko followed me, or I followed him. After that first show, we made
our own requisites.
In 1988 we saw a real magic show that was performed by another professional
magician Dedic Zeljko, artistic name - "Zeljoni". His performance was
refreshing for us. There were a lot of tricks that we had seen for the first
time. Me and Marko became very good friends with him and learned all about
magic tricks that he knew. He was based only on prepared tricks that he
bought from the magic shop and he did not have any magic books. From him we
found out address for Magic Shop in Sombor, Yugoslavia where we started
getting professional magic requisites.
Near the end of our high school career, I and Marko were professionally
performing magic shows in Banja Luka, in kindergartens, cafe bars and
restaurants. My personal magic show got in complete shape when I again by
luck got for a present a package of magic requisites from magician Renato
from Mostar, Bosnia. Well, I exchange it with him for magic books that I had
about cards in which he was so interested in. He was not interested in magic
tricks on stage so he send me those books.
In '91 I and Marko prerformed one of our last magic shows together in the
Club of students from Electric faculty "KSET" in Banja Luka, where we
performed for three nights. Then came the war. I went to regular Army, and
Marko left Yugoslavia and ended up in Germany. For me that was a long pause
from my magic work. Only with few returns to my faculty (Mechanical
engineering) during the war I was performing my independent magic shows.
In '94. I began preforming magic shows again for kids in middle school and in
kindergartens in Banja Luka and cities around it, with some help from my
friend Savo Popovic, who is very skilled to negotiate with directors of that
institutions. He helped me and was also an assistant on my stage too. I
returned to the Army and between those two times that i went back, i was
performing magic shows, where I brought a lot of happiness to kids and adults
in these terrible days. After the War I had a chance to freely do magic
shows.
I met a lot of magicians from Serbia, Yugoslavia, who helped me to develop my
magic shows on a better level. I started performing poorly with the way that
I learn from "Zeljoni" and started to perform magic shows in a much much
better way and that was with more communication with audience. Since then I
get a lot of new magic requisites and lectures on video cassettes, which are
irreplaceable today for learning new tricks and skills. Because of this I
changed almost all of my performances in magic shows and it is continuously
changing and growing.
Magician's work took me to Stuttgart, Germany, where I lived for four months
and performed magic shows on birthday parties, on stage in city halls in
those cities around Stuttgart. There I was performing for a couple of months
with Marko again after 7 years. Two months I performed by myself magic shows
for German audiences and audiences from my country, who worked there. They
were very successful magic shows there. You can freely look at my Photo album
and see some pictures from those shows. Some of the interesting shows were in
the amusement park "Trips drill" near Stuttgart, where I and Marko performed
one magic show and made balloons every day during three weeks of school
vacation. Then one magic show that stayed in my memory is my own performance
in the famous emporium "C&A", which is in main street Konigstra_e in
Stuttgart, for Open day 13th of Jun '98. I performed two magic shows and made
hundreds of balloons for kids. After my return from Germany I enrich again my
performances and activly did magic shows in lots of places for lots of
occasions, like I mentioned on the last page of this web site of magician
Golub.
Now I am living in Bracknell, Berkshire, England and working in this area.
